At Double Bay Doctors, we understand that menopause is a significant life transition - physically, emotionally and socially. You don't need to face it alone - we are here to help you navigate this stage with confidence, comfort and clarity.

Menopause

UNDERSTANDING MENOPAUSE (AND PERIMENOPAUSE)

Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 - the time when periods cease and the ovaries gradually stop producing oestrogen and progesterone.

The journey into menopause often begins with perimenopause, where fluctuating hormones may cause symptoms well before periods stop. Symptoms vary widely between individuals, and that's why personalised care is so important.

Common symptoms include:

  • Hot flushes and night sweats

  • Irregular periods or changes in menstrual cycle

  • Mood changes, anxiety, irritability, sleep difficulties

  • Vaginal dryness, discomfort, changes in libido

  • Changes in bone density and increased risk of bone loss

  • Cardiovascular changes and increased long-term risk of heart disease

  • Changes in skin, hair, weight and energy levels

OUR APPROACH: EDUCATION, EMPOWERMENT & WHOLE-PERSON CARE

We believe that effective menopause care blends medical expertise with support for your overall well being. At Double Bay Doctors we offer:

  • A safe space to discuss your concerns - physical, emotional or lifestyle - with a GP experienced in women's health

  • Clear, evidence-based information about what's happening in your body, what to expect, and how to prepare for the years ahead.

  • Individualised care plans tailored to what you value most, whether that be symptom relief, long-term health, hormone therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination.

  • Support for bone and heart health, and guidance to reduce long-term risks (e.g. osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease)

  • Respect for personal choice: if you prefer not to use hormone therapy, we'll work with you to explore non-hormonal strategies and lifestyle-based interventions.

  • Ongoing care and review - recognising that menopause isn't a single event, but a process that evolves over time.

TREATMENTS & SUPPORT WE OFFER

When you make a menopause advice consult, we'll discuss all available options - always guided by your health history, preferences, and long-term goals. Some of the pathways we may explore include:

Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT)

We’ll explain the benefits and risks of MHT and whether it might suit you, taking into account your personal and family history. If appropriate, we can tailor a hormone plan designed to relieve symptoms effectively while minimising risk.

Non-Hormonal Options and Lifestyle Strategies

If MHT isn't suitable, or isn't what you prefer, we offer a range of non-hormonal approaches. These may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications - nutrition, exercise (especially weight-bearing for bone health), stress management, sleep hygiene, and smoking/alcohol counselling.

  • Symptom-targeted treatments - for example, vaginal moisturisers or local therapies for vaginal dryness, sleep and mood support, and guidance around sexual wellbeing

  • Health screening and prevention - regular reviews of bone density, cardiovascular risk, and general health as you age.

Holistic, Individualised Care

Because menopause affects more than just hormones, we take a broad approach - considering physical health, mental wellbeing, lifestyle, and long-term health goals. You’ll always be treated as a whole person, not just a checklist of symptoms.
