Zoledronic Acid Infusions

At Double Bay Doctors, Dr James Kelly provides Zoledronic Acid infusions to eligible patients.

Zoledronic Acid is a biphosphate medication (Aclasta) used to treat conditions such as osteoporosis and Paget's disease. It works by slowing the activity of cells that break down bone, helping to preserve bone density and increase bone strength.

Zoledronic Acid infusions have been shown to reduce the risk of fractures by 35-70% and alleviate bone pain in individuals with bone disease.

With its long-lasting effects, Zoledronic Acid provides a convenient option that is only required once every 1-2 years.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

To be eligible for a Zoledronic Acid infusion, patients must meet the following requirements:

  • A referral from your specialist (endocrinologist), addressed to Dr James Kelly;

  • A copy of your most recent calcium and vitamin D test results; and

  • A prescription for the Zoledronic Acid medication that you have filled at the pharmacy - please remember to bring this with you to your appointment.

Do you meet the above criteria?

SIDE EFFECTS

Most patients tolerate Zoledronic Acid well, however mild flu-like symptoms, including fever or joint pain, may occur after the first infusion. These symptoms typically resolve within 2-4 days and are less common with subsequent treatments. Regular paracetamol can help manage these effects.

Rare complications include:

  • Impaired kidney function - staying hydrated helps to minimise the risk

  • Osteonecrosis of the jaw - maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental visits lowers the risk

  • Atypical leg fractures - rare, but associated with long-term use

If you experience any side effects following your infusion, please contact your specialist.

THE INFUSION PROCESS

Zoledronic Acid is given intravenously through a drip in your arm, and the procedure takes around 45 minutes.

On the day of the infusion:

  • Patients should take paracetamol around 30 minutes prior to their appointment.

  • Stay well hydrated, and drink at least two glasses of water before and after the infusion.

  • Remember to bring your medication with you to your infusion appointment.
