WHO SHOULD HAVE A SKIN CHECK?
Regular skin checks are encouraged for all Australians, even more so for those with risk factors. Your doctor can evaluate your risk level and guide you on self-examination techniques. Understanding your skin and recognising changes is vital as skin cancers are often seen, rather than felt.
SKIN CANCER RISK FACTORS
Certain traits can increase skin cancer risk, including:
-
A lighter natural skin tone
-
Skin that easily burns, freckles, reddens easily, or becomes painful in the sun
-
Blue or green eyes
-
Blonde or red hair
-
Certain types and large number of moles
-
A family history or previous personal history of skin cancer
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED A SKIN CHECK?
The Cancer Council recommends adults self-check their skin and moles every 3-months.
Those at risk should have a trained doctor examine them at least once a year, or as frequently as recommended by their practitioner.
