Skin Checks

At Double Bay Doctors, our specialised team of practitioners are trained to diagnose, analyse and remove skin lesions. We emphasise the importance of early detection through regular self-examination and routine checks with your GP.

WHO SHOULD HAVE A SKIN CHECK?

Regular skin checks are encouraged for all Australians, even more so for those with risk factors. Your doctor can evaluate your risk level and guide you on self-examination techniques. Understanding your skin and recognising changes is vital as skin cancers are often seen, rather than felt.

SKIN CANCER RISK FACTORS

Certain traits can increase skin cancer risk, including:

  • A lighter natural skin tone

  • Skin that easily burns, freckles, reddens easily, or becomes painful in the sun

  • Blue or green eyes

  • Blonde or red hair

  • Certain types and large number of moles

  • A family history or previous personal history of skin cancer

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED A SKIN CHECK?

The Cancer Council recommends adults self-check their skin and moles every 3-months.

Those at risk should have a trained doctor examine them at least once a year, or as frequently as recommended by their practitioner.

SKIN CHECK APPOINTMENT TYPES

Standard skin checks

A standard skin check involves a comprehensive examination of the skin's surface. During this check, your doctor will review your skin for any noticeable changes, irregularities or concerning spots. It is a fundamental assessment suitable for most individuals seeking routine skin health evaluations.

Dr Ahmad Hasanien – Full Skin Check

This 30-minute appointment is recommended for individuals at higher risk of skin cancer or those with more than three spots of concern. It involves a detailed and thorough examination and is best suited for patients who:

  • Have a personal or family history of skin cancer

  • Are at higher risk due to factors such as fair skin or extensive sun exposure

  • Have multiple concerning lesions they would like reviewed

  • Require careful assessment of moles or lesions on sensitive areas such as the face or neck

Dr Ahmad Hasanien – Spot Skin Check [1–3 lesions]

This shorter appointment is suitable if you have only 1–3 spots of concern you would like assessed. If you have more than 3 lesions or a higher risk of skin cancer, please book a Full Skin Check instead.

Please note that skin checks with Dr Ahmad Hasanien attract a higher gap fee than standard skin check appointments. Find more information about our fees here
